A few years ago, I was asked to keynote at a local patient safety forum. As is my practice, I like to learn a bit about the audience and the journey they've been on before developing a talk. In my preparations, it became evident that the health service was grappling with many of the same issues as healthcare organisations today. That is, a desire to innovate but a lack of clarity on how best to fold new thinking and methods (with fidelity) into everyday safety management practices. I tried to address this tension in my talk - linking contemporary theory to practical changes that could be supported now. I also developed a resource that attendees could take away and work through with their teams. An extract is reproduced here - you can also download the full pack at the bottom of the article. Tip: Consider spending 10 minutes at your monthly safety meetings discussing one principle at a time. Small everyday shifts could pay large dividends over time.
